As the world recognizes the unique opportunity afforded by the development of smart communities, Slovenia participated in the Urban & Rural Development track with a video presenting the development of smart cities and rural communities. Slovenian representatives who shared their views were Franc Bogovič, Member of the European Parliament, Matjaž Logar, Executive Director, Strategic Research & Innovation Partnership, Andrej Kotar, Chair of Program Board at Smart Cities and Communities Strategic Partnership, and Tjaša Ficko, Deputy Mayor, City of Ljubljana.
Andrej Kotar, Chair of Program Board, at Smart Cities and Communities Strategic Partnership, explained Slovenia’s approach to making smart cities a reality: “In Slovenia, we united behind the national declaration to boost the digital transformation of cities, communities, and villages towards a sustainable smart society. Based on the national declaration, all stakeholders committed firmly to cooperation, including national and local governments, the broader public sector, companies, universities, research institutions, non-government organizations, and others.”
He believes that by connecting a large number of stakeholders, Slovenia can create fertile ground for becoming a smart society. He emphasized that Slovenia has collaborated with some EU members to develop smart society reference projects in selected Slovenian cities and communities, which will take place during the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2021. He added: “With these reference projects, Slovenia will become an example to follow for other countries in Europe and around the globe.”
